10 Tips for Moving Into Your First House

Buying your first house is a huge milestone. After probably living with your parents during high school, in a dorm in college, and a rented apartment post-grad, you’ve finally bought your own home.

Now’s it’s time for the big move! Surveys have shown that, for many people, moving is one of the most stressful life events. Between finding a new home, packing, and the move itself, it’s no wonder that many people feel overwhelmed by moving.

It doesn’t have to be that way!

Keep reading for a few tips and moving advice that will ensure a stress-free move.

1. Start a File For Your New Home

First things first, you need to start a file for your first home. This is where you will keep all physical copies of appliance manuals, repair receipts, and other important paperwork that came with the home.

While you’re at it, create a digital folder on your computer to save all important documents that come via email, so they stay organized.

2. Pack a First Night Bag

After a long day of moving, the last thing you want to do as a new homeowner is search through boxes for a change of clothes and your toothbrush. Avoid this by packing an overnight bag of essentials. Include items like:

  • Hairbrush
  • Toothbrush
  • A few outfits
  • Medications
  • Contacts/glasses

Before packing your overnight bag and other belongings, make a checklist of all of your essentials. This will help make sure you don’t accidentally pack any of your essential items into boxes.

3. Start Packing Early

Pack early. You have a lot more belongings than you think. Starting your packing early will alleviate some of your stress when it gets closer to moving day.

4. Make Moving Arrangements in Advance

Contact your movers sooner than later. To get your boxes to your new house, it’s best to use professional movers. Professionals will treat all your items with care, leaving you time to deal with everything else that comes with moving into a new home.

Additionally, make sure to inform any friends or family of when you are moving if you want their help unpacking.

5. Label Your Boxes

Label every single box you pack. Label with what room the items go in and what the box contains. For example; Kitchen + dishes and utensils.

6. Use the Move to Declutter

Moving is the perfect time to go through all of your belongings. You are already having to go through and pack everything. Why not get rid of older items while you’re at it?

7. Update Your Mailing Address

Before you officially move, update your mailing addresses for all your accounts to your new address. You can also inform USPS of your address change, and they will forward any mail address to your old address to your new one.

8. Purchase Cleaning Supplies Before the Big Day

Before you start unpacking, you will need to clean your new home. Even if it’s new to you, there have been plenty of people walking around inside when the house was on the market. Make sure you purchase all the cleaning supplies before you get there, so you aren’t scrambling and having to run to the store in the midst of everything.

9. Look Into Box Recycling

You are going to have a lot of boxes. Don’t get stuck with all the cardboard after your move; research local recycling options to find recycling centers near you.

10. Prep Some Easy Snacks and Meals

Moving is stressful and hectic, but you still need to take care of yourself. Before life gets too chaotic, prep some easy snacks and meals that you can quickly grab and eat. This will save you money, so you aren’t constantly buying take-out during the move.
