How Long Does Packing for a Move Take?

Did you know that a person will move, on average, 11.7 times in their life? Now that is a lot of boxes!

Whether you’re relocating for a new job, a new school year, or just a new scene, you’ve probably wondered what packing timeframe you should expect.

Packing for a move should not be stressful! The information in this post will help calm those pre-packing nerves and give you tips to succeed!

Home Size

The time it takes to pack will vary greatly based on whether you are packing a home or packing an apartment.

As a general rule, plan to spend about one day packing for each room in your home. A “day”, in this case, means about 8 hours of packing time. If you can only dedicate 4 or 5 hours of time, you would want to mentally plan on more calendar days to accomplish your task.

Something else to consider is the size of your rooms, and any extra spaces you have like garages or patios. A 1,200 sq. ft. home will pack up faster than a 3,000 sq. ft. home even if they are both 3 bedrooms.

Home Contents

As you count the rooms in your home to determine your packing time, factor in the items in your home. A garage that’s stuffed to the brim requires more work than a sparse guest bedroom.

Your interests and design style will also affect your move time. If you’re a passionate collector of vinyl records, packing your living room will take more time than someone who is a self-proclaimed minimalist

Packing a home is a great opportunity to declutter your things. A simple box system will help keep you organized as your comb through your stuff. Construct 3 boxes and label them:

  • keep
  • donate
  • trash

At the end of the day or the week (depending on how quickly your boxes fill up), you can take trips to the donation centre or dumpster.

Tips to Speed Up the Process

Consider these tips to help speed up your packing timeline.

Make an Ultimate Packing Basket

Keep all of the supplies you need for packing in one basket and take it with you from room to room. That way you don’t need to tear the whole house apart looking for a permanent marker every time you need to label a box.

Don’t Pack Empty Space

If your dresser isn’t too heavy when full of clothes, leave the clothes in the drawers and plastic wrap them so nothing falls out. Don’t leave spare suitcases empty. Fill them with coats, dresses, linens etc.

Think Ahead

Save yourself a last-minute packing whirlwind by starting early on the things you don’t use. Seasonal decorations, novelty kitchen appliances, and things on bookshelves are great candidates for packing early. If it’s in the top of a closet, chances are you can pack it right now.
